Gov’t Mule has released a new live album, Live At The Cotton Club / Atlanta / February 20, 1997, the third release in their streaming-only series via Evil Teen Records. The brand-new live release features Gov’t Mule’s original line-up and was recorded in Georgia where the band was formed by front man Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody, as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band when they were off tour, and drummer Matt Abts. The fun side project filled the void of experimental rock power acts and have since gone on to showcase their virtuosity, intelligence, and breadth over the course of their decades-long career as one of the most timeless and active bands in the world. Live At The Cotton Club features a mix of songs from Gov’t Mule’s 1997 self-titled debut album and 1998 sophomore album, Dose, as well as covers of songs originally by Sonny Boy Williamson, Memphis Slim, Tom Waits, and more.

“I seem to remember it being a hot sweaty night even though it was February, and you can feel it in the recordings. The band was definitely in experimental mode -- going down some new roads and taking a lot of chances,” shares Haynes. “It’s great hearing this show again after all this time -- especially re-mixed and re-mastered. The music sounds as fresh as it felt when we played it.”

Live At The Cotton Club marks the third of several digital-only live album releases – and the first featuring the original trio line-up of HaynesAbts, and Woody – Gov’t Mule is sharing as they bring their jam-packed performances and master musicianship directly into fans’ homes. In recent months, Gov’t Mule delivered Live At The Angel Orensanz Center, which was recorded during the second of back-to-back shows as part of their New Year’s run in 2008 and features over two hours of remixed and re-mastered music from the show including an eclectic set of acoustic and electric favorites and rarities. Additionally, the band issued Live At The Beacon Theatre, recorded on New Year’s Eve 2017 when the band rang in the new year with special guest Jackie Greene as part of their annual New York City residency, performing a selection of the band’s classics as well as an array of covers.

The brand new live album was recorded during the second of back-to-back shows at the historic Angel Orensanz Center as part of their New Year’s run in 2008. The performance features over two hours of remixed and re-mastered music from the show including an eclectic set of acoustic and electric favorites and rarities as well as covers of songs originally by U2, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Beatles, and more.

“For the second release of this streaming-only series we find ourselves in Manhattan, where the East Village meets the Lower East Side, for the second of two nights at the oldest Jewish Temple in New York City – what a beautiful and graceful setting,” shares Warren Haynes. “We made the decision to strip down to a minimal approach in order not to overpower the small, very ‘live’ room that holds about 500 people. As is the case with any venue that brings its own sonic personality, we embraced the challenge of playing to the room and choosing songs that would benefit from the ambiance -- including a lot of original songs that don’t get played very often mixed in with some of the ones that do, along with some choice covers, many of which we had never played or had only been performed a handful of times. We hope you enjoy this re-mixed version of a truly unique Mule show.”

This is the second of several digital-only live album releases Gov’t Mule will share as they bring their jam-packed performances and master musicianship directly into fans’ homes. Last month, Gov’t Mule released Live At The Beacon Theatre, which was recorded on New Year’s Eve 2017 as the band rang in the new year with special guest Jackie Greene as part of their annual New York City residency, performing a selection of the band’s classics as well as covers of songs originally by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley, Neil Young, David Bowie, Steely Dan, and more.

A quick note from Warren:

This is the first release as part of an upcoming series of streaming service-exclusive “live” recordings chosen by yours truly and re-mixed by our own Jorgen Carlsson. We felt that this show was a good (and timely) place to start. As with any “live" recording there can be challenges, some of which we felt the need to clarify.

1) Due to technical gremlins the opening song of the show, “Thorns of Life,” did not get properly recorded to the multi-track, so we pieced together a mix as best we could by supplementing the original “live” mix with the uncorrupted files from the multi-track. We chose to include it but not as the first track; more like a bonus track at the end
2) The encore set was cut off by a digital malfunction, and although most of it appears in a properly recorded fashion the last several minutes of this mix are a combination of the original soundboard recording and an audience recording, which blended together surprisingly well.
3) The distorted/barely distinguishable vocal on “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” is completely intentional, as drummer Matt Abts was singing through a bullhorn while the audience read the newly adapted lyrics from a screen. If there were artwork or liner notes I would want to include those lyrics (as they are not the original words to the song), and possibly a picture of Matt rendering his eloquence through the megaphone; however, this is a digital-only release -- guess you had to be there
5) The annoying popping sound, which is very prevalent in “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” and beyond, is the balloons falling from the ceiling and being popped -- it was New Year’s Eve
